A few years back Alex and I went to visit his extended family in Illinois. IL is where Alex grew up and this was my first time traveling to the mid west. To say I fell in love is an understatement. The quaint little towns, all the green grass, and cute homes with their own character made me wish we lived there.
The funny things is, one of the things I loved most about these homes were the mudrooms.
Ahhhhh, a place for people to walk through your house and actually stomp the dirt off their shoes, hang their coat nicely, and take shoes off comfortably is a dream in my little OCD world. Everything you need all in one space before walking out the door is simply perfection to me.
For those of you from the Midwest and might be reading this probably think I’m crazy, but when you have lived in AZ the last (almost) 10 years and there are homes with NO CHARACTER and have little use for a room like this it makes a girl like me dream of alllllll the possibilities.
We have a entry closet near the front door that was previously a standard looking closet before the I started the hallway closet make over. I had a vision to make this our own little “mudroom” since this is where we typically store our jackets and shoes anyways.
(sorry guys, I wish I had a before picture but I failed at remembering to get one)
First I started by building a floating bench that you can see the DIY HERE. I also added the board and batten to give it a “mudroom” feel.
After I added the hooks and baskets it all started to come together just as I envisioned it!

In addition to the baskets and hooks I wanted to give the space a little texture so I added these beautiful mud cloth pillows from TownsendRoweHome.
I found the hooks from Home Depot and love that we now have a spot to hang backpacks, purses, and coats!
The large baskets are from World Market and the perfect size for holding shoes. I’ll probably get a 3rd one because you can never have too many storage baskets 😉
Well, there it is! Hope this inspires you to do something fun with your little spaces!
